The hospital’s inception aimed to provide medical assistance to those unable to afford
healthcare services. Over the decades, SPHMMC has expanded its capacity to over 700 beds,
catering to a catchment area exceeding 5 million people. Annually, the hospital manages
approximately 200,000 patients, with about 75% receiving free medical services, underscoring
its commitment to accessible healthcare.
Educational Excellence
In response to Ethiopia’s pressing need for medical professionals, SPHMMC inaugurated its
medical college in 2007 during the Ethiopian millennium celebrations. This initiative, led by the
Ethiopian Ministry of Health and Gordon Williams from Hammersmith Hospital in London,
introduced an innovative integrated and modular curriculum. This approach emphasizes
problem-solving techniques, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped to address the nation’s
healthcare challenges. The college offers a range of programs, including undergraduate
degrees in medicine, nursing, and midwifery, as well as postgraduate specialties in fields like
obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, surgery, and internal medicine.
Comprehensive Clinical Services
SPHMMC boasts over 13 specialized departments, staffed by more than 1,300 clinical and
non-clinical professionals. These departments encompass:
Internal Medicine: Providing comprehensive care for adult patients with a variety of
medical conditions.
General Surgery: Offering surgical interventions ranging from routine procedures to
complex operations.
Pediatrics: Dedicated to the health and well-being of children from infancy through
adolescence.
Obstetrics and Gynecology: Focusing on women’s reproductive health, prenatal care,
and childbirth.
Orthopedics and Traumatology: Addressing musculoskeletal issues and trauma-
related injuries.
Neurosurgery: Specializing in surgical treatment of disorders affecting the nervous
system.
Emergency Medicine and Critical Care: Providing immediate care for acute illnesses
and injuries.
In 2015, SPHMMC established Ethiopia’s first Kidney Transplant Center, marking a significant
milestone in the nation’s medical history. This center offers life-saving procedures and has
expanded the hospital’s capabilities in nephrology and renal care.
Commitment to Community and Partnerships
Staying true to its founding mission, SPHMMC remains dedicated to serving low-income and
rural populations. The hospital collaborates with various local and international institutions to
enhance its services and educational programs. Notable partnerships include affiliations with
Addis Ababa University, Jimma University, Tulane University, the University of Michigan, and
the Open University. These collaborations facilitate knowledge exchange, research initiatives,
and capacity building, enriching both the hospital’s and the college’s offerings.
Innovations and Future Aspirations
SPHMMC continually seeks to advance its infrastructure and services. Recent developments
include the inauguration of a new hemodialysis unit and the expansion of the National Kidney
Transplant Center. The institution is also focusing on enhancing its educational facilities, with
new complexes under construction to accommodate the growing number of students and
programs. These efforts align with SPHMMC’s vision to become a model center for medical
education and healthcare delivery in Africa.
